Everything Happens in June

June is a busy month in our family. Birthdays, anniversaries, Father's Day, and more are all piled into this month. On top of all the usual busyness, my husband has been busy in the church this week. There was a funeral, a baptism, summer confirmation class, and a meeting today to go over Synodical things for the convention all squeezed into the usual work for Sundays (sermon, bulletins, ect.) in two parishes.

I think we all are feeling the need for a vacation. We haven't been able to go on vacation for two years. Money has just been to tight to go off gallivanting about the country. We are going to take a vacation this year to visit family, who are sprinkled throughout three states. Someone in our parish suggested that we should take the kids to Disney World (where they took their vacation). One of those smile-and-nod moments. Ah, it will be good to get away, out of the corn...

Also this month in June, General Scuttlebutt posted his "seven things". If you're a fan of the General, march over and check it out!

We had someone ask why we drove our little Saturn and Echo for all these years of driving 200 miles a sunday going to three parishes instead of getting a big comfortable car. DUH - I didn't even do the smile and nod. Just said 45 mpg and no payments. Any other questions? We too are looking forward to vacation - we're driving to a little town about 6 hrs away to do some fishing and reading and pool swimming.

The best family vacation we ever took (and I can count the number we took on one hand--lack of funds seems to be universal with a young family!) wasn't that far from our home (at the time) in Fort Dodge, Iowa. About a year prior I had bought a teeny tiny pop-up camper at a garage sale for $400. I came home from work one night and our littlest met me at the door with "Guess what daddy did? He cut a hole in the camper!" WHAT!!! Sure enough my most wonderful and talented husband had cut a hole in the camper and installed an old window air conditioning unit we had so that we could take the camper to South Dakota and I would be comfortable! What a wonderful vacation we had! We did all the typical South Dakota tourist things...the Corn Palace, swimming at the Hot Springs, the Mammoth dig, the gold mine tour and, of course, Mt. Rushmore. We even went over to Wyoming to see Devil's tower. We stayed in our pop-up at state parks and in one really nice RV park. The kids were old enough to take it all in and really enjoyed it all. And at the perfect age to get all giggly when we were instructed about samples of "shist" at the mines!

Your children are still a little young yet to really appreciate a vacation like this...but never know what awaits down the road. (My kids were nice and nerdy and loved educational jaunts.)

BTW...we had that old pop-up camper for seven years...took it everywhere and had a blast camping with the family. Cheap fun and great opportunity to learn love...things get mighty tight in a pop-up camper!

There are less expensive options to Florida although they won't necessarily get you out of the corn! :)

Caroline, I hope you have a wonderful vacation with your family! It sounds like it should be relaxing.

Dixie, that sounds like a great vacation! We like the nerdy, educational vacations too. I didn't know you once lived in IA. Fort Dodge is about 3 1/2 hours away from us.

Thanks for the laugh! That really made me smile! I don't have any burning desire to go to FL anyway. We lived there for one year in the Tampa Bay area - one year was enough for me. My husband likes to joke that he keeps me around because it doesn't take expensive things to please me. A far less expensive trip is OK by me! I think that's when you end up making the most memories.
