Autumn Thoughts & Pictures

Best Autumn Memory From Youth:
(more of a sensory experience than an event)
Walking through the forest after it had rained, my feet dragging deep furrows in the wet leaves, the perfume of dampened bark and dark and loamy earth rising heavily on cold biting air.
Picture: Creeping Jennie turning fall colors on the tree in our front yard.

Best Autumn Memory Recently:
Raking up leaves in the yard, letting the kids jump and play in the pile, the crisp sound of leaves blending with the happy notes of children's laughter. Brisk air turning little noses and cheeks rosey red.
Picture: The kids playing outside, moving so fast they can hardly be caught on camera.

Favorite Autumn Foods:
Pumpkin bread, still hot with melty butter. A chai latte from the Naked Clay Cafe (back in Ft. Wayne). Honeycrisp apples with peanut butter. Anything at all with cinnamon in it.
Picture: Apples given to us by a kind and thoughtful church member from her own orchard.

Iowa Autumn:
The crops turn the landscape russet and brown as they near their harvest time, contrasting with the still-green grasses along the roads that are stained white with dust. The autumn sunsets stream over the hillside, setting the crops awash in golden hues.
Picture: Once again, our "backyard" facing the sunset. Somedays the quality of light is stunning, other days the light is as grey and dull as the damp fall day.

What fantastic photos, the light is incredible. That is one of the things about Autumn for me is the differenc ein the light, how it reflects and shines.

Lord have Mercy.
Gorgeous. It could make even me like Autumn. (So far, I only like Spring and Summer.)

Magnificent pictures! Autumn is the finality of an entire growing season coming to bear. Our farmers have worked so long and so hard under such difficult circumstances. Now we see the fruit of their labor. They perform a necessary task. By their work they feed the world. We had soybeans in our back yard. Next year we’ll be surrounded by wheat. It has just sprouted within the past few days. Autumn is the time of high expectations, a new school year, a new football season, anticipation of the coming holidays. Autumn is the time for planning - the end of the Church year - Thanksgiving, Advent Christmas and preparation for the coming Lenten journey. Autumn is an explosion of color followed by dormancy which can last for months. I dread winter with its depressive grip. Perhaps this is why I dream of spring, bask in summer, and cherish fall.
