Ice, Ice Baby!
This winter has been quite boring with regards to photography. I like to get out of the house and explore and take pictures of the things I find interesting. However, it has been way too cold to be outside and the lighting is terrible - all gray skies. Yesterday the kids and I got to be outside for a bit after being cooped up inside. There had been a winter storm with freezing rain and snow that blanketed everything in ice and closed school for two days. Finally, something pretty this winter! Evelyn, Dominic and I bundled up and braved the cold. Here are some of the beautiful things we found:
The birch tree already has buds for Spring. The pussy willow and several other plants have fat buds all over them too! They look so sculptural glazed in ice.
Dominic was glad to find the biggest icicles ever!
The hydrangea has kept some dried blooms on it all winter. They have their own little icicles too.
The icy garden fence with the pussy willow bush at the end. All gray and silver.
Ice-covered fall leaves are the last little bit of color for the winter.
Evelyn is developing quite an eye for photography. She helped find lots of interesting shots and even posed for this picture.
Finally, an old praying mantis nest (called an "ootheca") in the corner of two twigs. Did you know each nest can hatch between 100 to 200 baby mantis?
